Making New Friends as a Career Girl

Making New Friends as a Career Girl About 2 years ago, one of my very close friends (we’ll call her Sandra) started to drift away from me.   We were really close in college: we were in the same sorority, we went out together all the time, we went to workout classes together, we even synched our schedules so that we could pull all-nighters on the same night.   I considered her to be my BFF4L (best friend forever for life). A few months after she graduated, I noticed we were slowly spending less and less time together.   Sandra was starting to hang out with another group of friends more than our group of friends.   I saw her less frequently, despite my efforts to make plans with her.   I started to feel left out and rejected.  Am I not interesting anymore?   Is it because I’m still in college? Well I’m about to graduate!  Remember our agreement to move in together when we’re old and have margaritas all day? I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out what was happening and blaming myself.   I sought out advice from all of my other friends about the situation, but they didn’t have the answer eitheruntil I talked to my co-worker, Max. “Well,” he said, “they say that you don’t keep the majority of your friends forever.   Every few years or so, you’ll have a new set of friends.”   NEW set of friends? The friends I have now will always be my friends forever.Right?  I quickly rejected Max’s reasoning and went back to moping around, trying to figure out why my BFF4L wasn’t wanting to spend time with me anymore. But then the exact same thing started happening with some of my other friends.  They were either drifting away or I was the one drifting away from them.  What was going on?! Before I knew it, I realized Max was right.  As you go through life and change, so do your friends. You may have a small group of friends that will always be close to you no matter what, but the majority of your other friends will come and go.  You may find that you are no longer compatible with the friends you always partied with in college anymore.  Maybe you dont even want to be friends with some of your friends anymore.  Its sad, yet completely reasonable. A lot of people find that trying to make new friends as a professional in your 20s and 30s is more difficult than it was in high school and college.  Perhaps its even scarier than dating.  Back then, you were limited to the people in your classes and extracurricular activities that you saw over and over again, so it was much easier to make new friends.  But as a young professional, you have many more priorities and responsibilities.  As a result, its challenging to squeeze in time for making new friends. If you find yourself in this position, dont be afraid!  Even if you end up losing your closest friends, there are always new friends to be made.  Here are a few suggestions on how to meet and make new friends as a young professional: 1. Join MeetUp.com This site allows people in any city in the US to create an event and invite pretty much anybody to join.  Find a MeetUp group that interests you and check it out! 2. Attend young professionals networking events Not only can you network with your peers, you will be able to meet a ton of people too.  Just make sure you have conversations of substance and really get to know someone! 3. Join a workout class At the end of the class, everyone will be high on endorphins.  Endorphins make people happy.  Happy people are more likely to be willing to make friends. To this day, I dont consider Sandra to be my friend anymore.  Ive stopped trying to salvage our relationship and just let it be.  We are in two completely different places in our lives, and, maybe one day, we will be good friends again.  Its important that you are a good friend to yourself  and surround yourself with friends who will lift you higher and help you be a better person.  After all, the friendship you have with yourself is the most important friendship of them all.

How to Take a Job Brief Like a Boss

How to Take a Job Brief Like a Boss Contrary to its title, taking a job brief should be anything BUT brief.  To stand out as an agency recruiter who really takes their job and their clients needs seriously, its important to drill down for as much information as possible. Knowledge is power, and job brief  basics simply arent enough to set you up for success. Of course you need to know the obvious stuff: the role, title, level, salary and location. However there is so much more you should  find out,  to make your life easier in the long run. As soon as youve got the job spec and these key pieces of information, its hard not to want to tap out, pick up the phone and start getting  in touch with all your star candidates on the hotlist, who you just know  will be up for it! This urge is especially hard to fight when you are up against other consultants who might just steal your favourite candidates from under you, by sending it to them  and gaining representation rights first.  Whether youre part of a conference,  or just having a one-to-one, the more questions you get answers to, the better placed youll be to  give your client a bespoke, outstanding  service. Bring the role to life Job descriptions are  great documents for summarising the main points of the job brief, and who it is the business is looking for. However in a lot of cases, they are also very generic documents full of buzzwords and idealistic attributes. As one of the earliest sales tools used in trying to recruit a star employee, its amazing how little selling actually goes on within them!  By really dissecting a role, you will have much more information to use when approaching suitable candidates. When great candidates seem initially disinterested,  having a holistic understanding of the opportunity will help you win them over. Why has this role come about? How big is the team they will slot into? What will be this persons main deliverables? What are the growth prospects, development opportunities and optional  career paths for this person? How do you describe the culture of the team organisation? Whom will they actually report to? Understand the status By the time the role lands in your trusty, more-than-capable hands, theres no doubt its been through a fair bit. Hiring managers would have had their own crack at talent-spotting or it would have been advertised internally; either way theres had to have been some unsuccessful attempts occur, using agencies is an expensive solution after all. Of course you wish theyd just given the job straight to you; you are the expert and you could have filled it for them months ago, saving  them a few grey hairs in the meantime. What have you done so far, both internally and externally? What challenges have you come up against so far? Hone in on the person People buy people. At the end of the day, if someone ticks all the technical boxes but is an absolutely arrogant know-it-all, hiring managers will quickly push them aside. Its really important to understand what sort of person they want to hire, and  where there  preferences lie.  Job descriptions often paint a perfect profile that doesnt really reflect a a realistic talent pool. The more opinions you can get on this, the easier it will be for you to know the right fits when you see them, as well as the absolute no-nos. What skills experience is must have versus nice to have? What sort of people succeed in the company? What companies would you like them to come from? Is there anything you definitely do not want to see on a CV? What would constitute the wow-factor? Probe into the process A successful career in agency recruitment is underpinned by a consultant being able to manage a healthy pipeline of roles, and managing time and effort input effectively so as to maximise the chance at closing as many deals as possible. Asking about the process will help you gauge how quickly to work, how much time to spend on it and your likelihood of filling the position. This information will help you prioritise the search against all of your other deliverables. The information you gain by asking process-related questions will also help you  judge how serious and committed the business is to making this hire. How many CVs would you like in the shortlist? When do you want this person to start? What is the interview process? When would you like the shortlist? Feedback turnaround time? How many other agencies are working on this brief? The more information you get,  the easier it will be to spot  a match when you see one! Can you think of any other great questions to ask? Let us know in the comments below. Image: Shutterstock

Pros and Cons of Temporary Staffing - Classy Career Girl

Pros and Cons of Temporary Staffing According to the US Department of Labor, bad hiring decisions can equal 30%  of the individual’s first-year potential earnings. According to this study, more than 66% of companies experienced negative effects  of bad hires. In our current market, both temporary staffing and permanent staffing solutions are much needed, but each has their pros and cons. The best hiring method should be chosen based on the type, resources and goal of your organization. Pros and Cons of Temporary Staffing The Pros  Benefits of Temporary  Staffing Temporary staffing ensures that short-term tasks are completed by very skilled workers, without having to hire them as permanent employees. These employees can quickly refresh an organization with their new views, strategies, and creativity, as they complete specific needs that are not part of the usual business operations. Its economical, fast, and dynamic. You can also avoid big useless expenses. Temporary staffing should be used when not all tasks should be handled by the same employees â€" especially when flexibility is required. When a more specific skill is required, the company must seek short-term collaborations. Avoiding hiring only long-term workers will reduce the costs significantly, avoiding all the added expenses, such as payrolls and benefits. You also have a less lengthy selection process to deal with when hiring temporary employees. [RELATED: Are You Bad at Management The 5 Common Traits] The Cons  Disadvantages of Temporary Staffing Short-term recruits will not be familiar with your company, goals, and strategies. There cannot be a real commitment to the firm, since theyre there only for an episode. Their goal is lighter and their mission will be shorter. Businesses cant thrive solely based on this temporary staffing model. Heres why you may want to consider permanent staffing instead: Hiring permanent staff ensures that the key roles within a company are being covered. Professional permanent placement solutions exist to provide the most valuable and skilled workers for such positions. Permanent staffing companies always keep an eye on the long-term goal of the hiring organization, as they need to find candidates able to work for years on end with the same employer to reach those goals. They make it possible to retain employees for a longer time and satisfy their career goals, too. Candidates with a short-term focus are excluded by the permanent staffing services. The usual contemporary business model has companies reaching out to permanent placement services to help them make the right selection for key positions, then companies will fill out the flexible roles with short-term workers. Most agencies recommend a mix of the temporary staffing and permanent staffing, as firms consider that full-time and temporary employment work best together.

Demilitarizing Your Military Resume - CareerAlley.com

Demilitarizing Your Military Resume - CareerAlley.com We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. ** This article originally appeared on the blog **Onlinecareertips.com** By Adrienne Erin Online Career Tips, Contributor You might be a 0311 ground pounder in the United States Marine Corps for eight years. Maybe youre a Navy Corpsman, with more field experience than any hospital internship could have ever provided. Or perhaps youre a Gunnery Sergeant, training new recruits from dawn to, well, dawn. Leaving the military can be as much of a culture shock as enlisting. But dont worry; your military resume will transfer to a civilian career. You just have to learn how to speak civilian. Start Transitioning Theres more to being a civilian than getting a job. Remember how strange or even difficult the transition from civilian to military life was? That same stress can return when you make the transition back to being a civilian. Youll discover many resources for military personnel during this transition period, but the government Transition Assistance Program was specifically created to help ease the transition for military personnel and their families. Make use of these workshops and include your spouse or family. Dont miss out on useful opportunities. These courses will also help you make a connection between your military and civilian life, which will translate to your resume. MOS to Civilian Career Odds are good that its been years or even decades since you applied for a job. The most critical part of finding a job is, of course, your resume. Tailoring your military resume to fit a civilian career is a necessary evil. Most civilians dont understand what your military service really means, so listing that you were a vehicle commander on a light armored vehicle doesnt automatically translate to management experience or able to lead calmly during high stress situations. There are a few basic points to remember while you write your resume: Your military position or title is less important in translation than what your position actually involved. Make sure you put the brunt of your focus on your experience. Dont list dozens of acronyms and awards. Just mention whats appropriate when needed. Keep it simple. Only elaborate when its absolutely necessary. You can also and refer to these common military to civilian translations as needed. Drop the Jargon Youve spent years, possibly decades, using career jargon that only applies to military careers. Not only do you have to learn how your military career translates to a civilian career, but you have to learn how to speak civilian, too. You must also drop the jargon for positions that would place you as a civilian working for the military. Federal positions are sought after not only for the decent pay, but for the familiar atmosphere. But just because youd be working on a base doesnt mean its safe to use jargon. Utilize Free Career Tools There are free career tools available to you that can help with making the transition to a civilian work life. Here are two of the best: com MOS Translator: Use this tool to help you sort out what skills your military career has provided you. It even simplifies terminology for civilian resumes. Veterans Job Bank: This is a national directory that helps connect veterans with companies looking to hire vets. Why bother working for a company that doesnt understand the military when there are so many employers looking for people just like you? Whether youre moving from a military desk job or an infantry position, your military career has provided you with a strong foundation to transition back to life as a civilian. Use the available resources to help consolidate your hard work into a well-deserved civilian position. We are always eager to hear from our readers. Things are changing - how are you keeping up -

Things are changing - how are you keeping up - How are you managing change? Hank Jackson, the Society for Human Resources (SHRM) CEO opened the organizations national conference last week with comments centered around the pace of change. Explaining that both success and failure can come at break-neck speed, Jackson reminded attendees that being flexible is one way to prepare for change. Companies he mentioned who did not adapt as quickly as needed and paid the price? Blockbuster and Borders. Preparing for change involves a workforce ready to compete in a global economy and who have skills we need right now and that well need going forward. The importance of change and being adaptable was also a key theme in Malcolm Gladwells remarks. Gladwell, best-selling author and pundit, pointed out how even the way change happens (or tries to happen) is changing! He compared the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s, which was an organized and hierarchical movement with strong, top-down leadership to the Occupy movement of the past year, which had no leader, no specific ideology or strategy and was loosely organized at best. Gladwells point? Millennials prefer unstructured movements they learn from Wikepedia (many authorities), not the encyclopedia (one authority). Gladwell explained, They take a profoundly different attitude toward authority and toward expertise. Gladwell explained this as a paradigm shift from hierarchies to networking, from discipline to flexibility. However, he closed his remarks by explaining that networks can start revolutions, but hierarchy is needed to finish them. An interesting way to think about and evaluate change and how we approach change and its results. What does this all mean for job seekers and business owners? How are you preparing for your next thing? If you are a job seeker, are you embracing new technologies and new ways to demonstrate your expertise and expand your network? While Im not on the resume is dead bandwagon, we all know being competitive means jumping into using new tools, which may be uncomfortable or even difficult. You dont want to use Blockbuster as your model, though if you dont change, you will probably be left behind. Are you approaching your challenges in an organized manner, or are you more an Ill take it as it comes type of planner? Maybe youre not looking to start a revolution, but if you are (maybe in the form of a new business idea?), are you incorporating some hierarchical structure? Hank Jackson reminded us, Something that sounds like sci fi today can put you out of work tomorrow. He also noted, If you dont know where you are going, you will end up somewhere else. Things are changing. You need to change, too. photo by busy.pochi
